STANDARDS OF ASSESSMENT

1. The student will be able to recognize mathematical improvement over the course of the school year.

2. The student will be able to set goals and evaluate their progress towards meeting them.

3. The student will be able to identify their strengths and weaknesses.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A PORTFOLIO?

The purpose of this portfolio is to showcase students’ progress over the course of a year. They will be able to identify their strengths and weaknesses through self-evaluation, set goals for themselves, and show proficient organizational skills. The portfolio will be a project under construction during the course of the school year culminating into a wonderful collection of student work, thoughts, and reflections. It is something the students can be proud of, enhancing their self-efficacy. It keeps them in tune to what is going on in the classroom at all times by holding them accountable. The portfolio is a terrific resource to provide a summary of the school year. The following pages will better explain the procedures being used to build and assess portfolios.

BUILDING THE PORTFOLIO

The following process for building a portfolio should be handed out and thoroughly explained to the students at the beginning of the school year. Past samples (if possible) should be shown to point out what a good portfolio looks like in comparison to a poor one.

I. WHAT WILL BE INCLUDED?
A. Cover sheet
B. Goals for the year
1. will be reassessed at the end of each quarter
C. Weekly journals
1. attitudes/feelings towards class
2. thoughts on your personal progress (goals)
3. strengths and weaknesses (what to improve upon)
4. what you have learned
D. Samples of your best/worst work
1. be sure to write why you chose them on the item, itself
E. Anything else you feel would contribute to it
F. Reflection on portfolio
1. completed at end of the year
2. identify areas of improvement
3. identify areas that still need improvement
4. did you achieve your goals?

II. HOW / WHEN WILL WE WORK ON THEM?
A. during the year, portfolios will be kept by the teacher to be handed out when time is given to work on them.
B. working folders will be used to keep possible additions to your portfolios during the course of a chapter.
C. at the end of every chapter.
D. You will meet with a different partner at the end of each chapter to discuss likes and dislikes of items in each other’s working folder.
E. Suggestions will be made for improvement of your portfolios and items can be added or removed.

ASSESSING THE PORTFOLIO

Their are several forms of assessment that can be used on this project. A few might include:

1) Use a checklist where failure to meet all criteria results in a loss of points.
2) A weighted grade pointed out to them in the course outline.
3) Peer grading using a checklist.
4) Grade their self-assessment and goal sheets.

PORTFOLIO CHECKLIST

Again, this sheet should be handed out to the students at the beginning of the course and be adequately discussed.

**** You will receive a score of 15 if all required elements are present, a 0 otherwise.
